Jayne Dennis

About me:

I have over 10 years experience in the field of gene expression profiling, both working on my own research interests and enabling the work of others. Gene expression data are generated to yield biological insight (for example molecular response or mechanism of action) or development of clinical classification algorithms. We have recently adopted next generation sequencing although the majority of work has utilised microarrays.

I provide comprehensive training for all levels of researcher, from professor to undergraduate student. Training includes experimental design, sample preparation and handling, data analysis, data management (including submission to public repositories) and publication. I am also familiar with issues related to working with tissue repositories.

Previously I was Laboratory Manager at the CSC/IC Microarray Centre at Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK. I was responsible for management of labs providing microarray services to over 200 research groups across the Medical Research Council’s Clinical Sciences Centre and Imperial College. The academic focus of the centre concerned warehousing microarray data and MIAME compliant experimental information.

My postdoctoral position involved the use of gene expression profiling of pancreatic cancer to develop an algorithm to predict response to chemotherapy. This built on work during my PhD at the University of Glasgow which used publicly available gene expression data to develop a classification algorithm of adenocarcinomas. The algorithm, constructed using Rough Set Theory and Boolean logic, was successfully validated using a series of 300 tumours in tissue microarrays.

I hold a 2:i degree in Biology from the University of Nottingham and am currently working towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Biomedical and Healthcare Education.
